TRENDS IN FOREIGN INSTITUTIONAL INVESTMENT
 
 

Details of investment upto December 1998 by Foreign Institutional Investors registered with the SEBI and granted approval under FERA by the Reserve Bank of India are presented in Table No. 24. In December 1998, the net investment of FIIs was positive at US $ 49.5 million reflecting a net capital inflow. During the first nine months of current financial year, there has been a net decrease in portfolio investments by $ 634.1 million. During April-December 1998, for 6 months gross sales of FIIs exceeded their purchase resulting in net outflows. The excessive sales had adverse impact on secondary market as during the same months (April to June, August, October and November). BSE, Sensex and other indices also had fallen.
